Lake Ol'Bolossat and the surrounding Aberdare highland landscape
Why It Matters

An Ecosystem Worth Protecting

  • Vital Water Source

Lake Ol’Bolossat is Kenya’s only major highland lake outside a protected area, feeding rivers that supply water to communities and wildlife across Nyandarua County.

  • Rich Biodiversity

The wetland hosts significant populations of resident and migratory birds, alongside fish and mammal species that depend on a healthy, undisturbed shoreline.

  • Climate Resilience

Restoring forest cover across the surrounding watershed stabilises rainfall patterns, reduces soil erosion, and protects farmland from increasingly unpredictable weather.
